This course presents a survey of the development of British literature focusing on the influence of culture and history on literature. Throughout our journey we will examine poetry, prose, and plays works; and reflect on how ideas of empire, religion, sexuality, race, class, and others have been presented and praised throughout Britain’s tradition. The purpose is that students can develop sensitivity and reflective engagement with the target language. The course is aligned with the view of bilingualism as a process involving the interaction of two linguistic codes and their cultural and social components (Vargas et al., 2008) to build intercultural awareness and explore personal and social issues. Likewise, in accordance with the institutional biopsychosocial and cultural approach, the course attempts to provide learning spaces to conceive literature as a cultural innovation in the development of human beings.
